This season's report

The 2008 year is here!

We plan to get off to a good start this year with several early trips to Lake Alan Henry. Its my goal to get you on the Share Lunker page and this is a great place to do it.

Letter From Dexter, NC.

"With a short hour and a half invested on Wednesday morning, the turkey were up on us two to nothing.  Two big Rios answered my calling for about thirty minutes and finally walked up to around fifty yards of our hide looking for the hen making all of the fuss.  Since I didn’t know how the gun I was holding would shoot at that distance and I was on the opposite side of a nine strand barbed wire fence (mistake number one), I held my fire.  They walked off through the mesquite and oaks still gobbling when they didn’t see the hen." " After business was attended too, we arrived back to the ranch around 4:30 that afternoon.  Figuring I could change their mind if they came back and because Kris had seen them strutting on our side of the fence the prior afternoon, we sat basically in the same hide.  Mistake number two!  After sitting for no more than fifteen minutes, what looked like two bigger toms started down the fence line towards us.  I am not sure they could even hear what little calling I had done, due to high winds of around 20 mph.  Results of this encounter, they walked back up through the same spot as the two had that morning.   I should have trusted my gut but instead I fired three quick shots at one standing and running turkey and three more shots at flying turkey.  Turkey 3, Dexter and Kris 0.  Later that afternoon we chased more toms on the other section of the ranch until around 6:00PM but never got in range of them with the wind.  At sunrise on Thursday morning, the winds had picked up another notch and we decided to play the same card in the bottom and not make the same mistake three times in a row.  So across the fence we go.  We both settle into a nice juniper bush and wait for the right time.  On what I believe was my first call, a tom thundered back from across a creek and up a small hill behind us.  A short five minutes later after strutting and gobbling all the way to the creek, he peeped over the creek bank at about twenty steps and a load of Federal premium #4’s sealed the deal."

"The Lord has blessed me with many opportunities over the years to experience his great outdoors in many different parts of the United States.  More importantly than the opportunities are the friendships that have come from those experiences.  As hunters, we all know that these bonds are the strongest among men outside of family.  I wish everyone a great spring season and a successful one filled with memories for the future."
